Touching the
void
On the first paragraph the author writes an “awful weariness washed
through me” this shows that he has given up and it gives the impression how
tired and weak he is at that moment and helps the reader understand his
feelings. If the writer had written he was tired then the reader would not have
got a clear message because everybody feels tired during the day at some point.
In the first paragraph he also uses words to make the reader feel tense. An
example of this is when he says “there was no need for the torture”, he uses the
word torture to explain the agony and pain he was going through, also he uses “endless
hanging” this makes the reader want to read more and shows that he is in
endless pain. The writer uses short sentences for effect. These make the reader
want to read more an example of this is when he says “How long will you be
Simon?” and “It would be soon”.
The atmosphere the writer creates is mysterious and deserted.
He does this by describing the space below as “a dark space yawned there, Bottomless”.
The writer also asks himself a lot of questions maybe this is showing he is
going a little bit mad and doubting himself.
In paragraph 4 he uses a metaphor “a black hole calling me”. He
uses this because a black hole is never-ending and frightening and he once the
reader to feel how he felt about what was below him.
In the last paragraph when he says “the stars went out” means
everything went dark. He uses the word pounce to explain that is happened really
quickly and to give the reader a shock like he had. On the last line when he
says “endlessly into nothingness, as if dreaming of falling.” It makes the reader feel like the writer did
not really believe that he was falling.
